How Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape Rehabilitates Your NY/NJ Property

September 12, 2020 |

This summer was a hot one and your Rockland County or Bergen County lawn and landscape took a beating under the sun.

Now, it’s time to rehabilitate your property since the temperatures have cooled off as we head into fall.

How Does Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape Fix Sun-Damaged Grass?

A hot, dry summer takes it out of your lawn. You may have let your grass yard go dormant in July and part of August. Now, it’s starting to bounce back.

However, heavy foot traffic, especially since you staycationed at home this year, causes the soil to compact. When clay soil compacts, it means that water, oxygen and nutrients can’t penetrate underground to your lawns root system.

Also, your grass lawn may have more than a half an inch of thatch. You can check by cutting out 1 sq.ft. of turf and dirt. See the tan, dry layer in the middle? That’s thatch. If you measure it and it’s over a half-inch, you need your yard dethatched.

Why?

Because excess thatch suffocates your lawn, plus rainwater can’t penetrate through the thatch—leaving it moist and open to disease.

Here’s what Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape can do for your lawn:

  1. Core aeration: Your lawn care technician will take an aerator and move up and down your yard. The aerator pulls out small plugs of soil—about 3”. If you listen closely, it may sound like the ground is taking a deep breath. In goes oxygen, and out goes carbon dioxide.
  2. Overseeding: Typically, we overseed lawns that have thinning or bare patches. After we’re finished aerating your property, we’ll overseed it. We also will add organic compost or topsoil over the areas where we seeded, if requested.
  3. Gypsum Application: Along with your aeration, you may want to consider a gypsum application to further reduce the compaction of your soil and help release nutrients trapped within the clay soil.
  4. Dethatching: If you had your Bergen County lawn aerated, you won’t need to dethatch it. However, if you don’t need your turf aerated, but you did measure a half inch or more of thatch, then you need us to bring our dethatcher to thin out that excess thatch.

  1. Add winterizer: Depending on the turf program you chose, we’ll add fertilizer in September to help revive your lawn. Then, at the end of the season, we’ll add a winter fertilizer that will add a shot of potassium into the soil.

Potassium helps grass roots go deeper underground for winter as well as develop root hairs that uptake nutrition and moisture. Potassium also helps in photosynthesis before the grass is covered in snow.

Seasonal Yard Maintenance: Cleaning Up Your Lawn before It Snows

The leaves will soon fall to the ground, carpeting your lawn. At Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape, we’ll chop up your leaves, so they dissolve back into the ground, giving your yard a boost of nitrogen.

However, if you don’t want the leaves mulched, we’ll blow them into a pile and haul them away for you.

In addition to leaves, we’ll clean up any tree fruit or nuts as well as sticks that fell.

We’ll keep mowing your lawn up until the end of November. And we’ll cut it a little shorter on the last mow of the season. You don’t want long grass bending over under wet leaves and snow because you’ll be opening up your turf to snow mold.

Finally, we’ll blow out your outdoor irrigation system for you. You don’t want water freezing and thawing in the pipes. So, we’re happy to provide that service for you.

Don’t Forget About Fall Flower Bed Maintenance

Your Rockland County flowerbeds also need some TLC before winter arrives. At Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape, we provide the following flower bed maintenance during the fall:

  1. We’ll split your perennials.
  1. We’ll add seasonal color with chrysanthemums, asters, pansies, and pumpkins.
  1. We’ll plant bulbs, so you have early spring color with snowdrops and crocuses. We’ll also plant daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, and peonies.
  1. We’ll add a fresh batch of mulch. Remember, mulch is more than a pretty face. It helps protect plant roots from freeze-thaw cycles, regulates soil temperature, holds in moisture, and provides extra nutrition to plants while it breaks down.
  2. We’ll plant new trees and shrubs for you. Fall is an excellent time of year. It’s still warm enough to add new trees and shrubs for winter interest and early spring color.

We’ll help you decide what looks best on your property. And we only use quality plant materials.
