Why Your Bergen County, NJ or Rockland County, NY Lawn Needs Core Aeration & Overseeding this Fall

You can tell that summertime is winding down. The kids are back in school, there’s a crispness in the air, and your lawn is greening up again after the summer’s heat.

Now is the time to schedule your core aeration and overseeding appointment with us at Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape.

Why does your property need aeration and overseeding? Your soil may be compacted, you may have bare spots on your lawn, and you want new turfgrass to develop deep root systems before wintertime.

You Get the Best Results with Aeration and Overseeding in the Fall

Fall is the best time to aerate and overseed your lawn. Why? Because the temperatures are cooler, and there’s less competition with weeds.

If your Rockland County lawn feels hard when you walk on it, you probably have soil compaction. Likewise, your yard may have bare spots or thinly growing turf. Aeration and overseeding will solve all three of these lawn problems.

At Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape, we use an aerator to make passes up and down your Bergen County lawn. The aerator pulls up small plugs of soil that will dissolve back into the ground the next time it rains, or you turn on your lawn’s irrigation system.

Core aeration provides these five benefits:

  1. It relieves soil compaction. The aeration passes puncture holes in the soil so it can receive light, nutrients, and air.
  2. It opens up thatch. Thatch is the layer between the ground and living lawn grass. Some thatch is fine. But you don’t want more than a half-inch of thatch because it’ll suffocate the soil as well as provide a home for insects and turf diseases.

  1. It preps your Rockland County, NY lawn for overseeding. Typically, we overseed your lawn after we aerate it. The lawn seed falls into the new holes in the soil to develop deep roots and a healthy stand of yard grass.
  2. It relieves your soil of carbon dioxide. The soil that houses your Bergen County yard grass is a living organism. So, it breathes just like you and I do. Aeration opens up the ground so it can breathe out carbon dioxide and receive oxygen.
  3. Your soil now can receive more oxygen, water, and sunlight after it’s aerated. When your Rockland County soil gets enough oxygen, water, and sunshine, it’s healthy underground, allowing new grass seed to grow and develop.

Why is Late Summer and Early Fall the Best Times to Plant Grass Seed in the Northeast?

Since intense, summer heat is past and the days are cooling, grass seed in New York and New Jersey can develop deep root systems and grow into a decent stand of lawn grass before winter.

If you live in Bergen County or Rockland County, your lawn grass is a cool season blend. Cool season grasses grow best in the fall and early spring. Warm-season grasses, on the other hand, grow best in warmer temperatures.

Turfgrass seed has less competition with weeds since weeds are warm-season plants. Crabgrass and plantains, among other weeds, grow best during the hot, dry days of summer. The cooler temperatures now put these weeds into dormancy.
