Does your lawn look like a dandelion field every spring? What other types of plants do you have growing on your lawn besides healthy turf?
While no one can have a 100 percent weed-free lawn, Joe Holland, of Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape, says that good lawn care practices and proper herbicide treatments can keep those annoying broadleaf weeds at bay.
Here are six popular broadleaf weeds that grow in Rockland, Westchester, Bergen, and Orange Counties:

  • Dandelions
  • Thistle
  • Henbit
  • Black Medic
  • Prostrate Knotweed
  • Broadleaf Plantain

Controlling Broadleaf Weeds

Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape will come to your property to consistently care for your turf. They will control the weeds on your lawn through good property maintenance practices. The Majestic crews will employ the following practices to bring health as well as diminish the weeds on your lawn. They will:

  • Apply routine fertilizers to expand and strengthen your lawn’s root system
  • Mow on a regular basis so that no more than one third of the grass blade is removed at a time
  • Treat insects and diseases as needed when permitted
  • Regularly apply grass seed in the fall because a thick, healthy lawn will provide less opportunity for weed seeds to take hold.

All of these practices will help prevent a broadleaf outbreak. Yet, if you do see any of the above offenders popping up on your lawn, Majestic has a second line of attack. They will apply post-emergent herbicides to kill the established weeds.
Most broadleaf weeds can’t be treated until they’ve started growing above-ground and pre-emergent herbicides are ineffective in controlling above-ground weed growth. But post-emergent herbicides will kill the entire plant including its root system. It can take up to three weeks for weeds to die once a post-emergent is applied, and repeat applications may be necessary if new weeds emerge after the original treatment.
Joe Holland says that post-emergent herbicides should not be applied to newly seeded lawns until the new grass has been mowed three to five times.
Broadleaf weed control is an ongoing battle that you can win. Let Majestic help you fight this battle by taking care of your lawn maintenance and post-emergent herbicide applications for you.
