Recycling Your Live Holiday Tree
Majestic Lawn Care & Landscape, Rockland County, NY & Bergen County, NJ
No sooner do you have your Rockland County, NY or Bergen County, NJ live holiday tree on display then it’s time to take it down.
Some people start taking down their holiday decorations on Christmas Day while others leave their holiday trees decorated until mid-January. No matter when you dismantle your tree, you need to know how to get rid of it after the holiday season.
Now, you’re wondering, “What should I do with my Christmas tree now that I don’t need it anymore?”
Recycling Your Live Holiday Tree
Fortunately, we live in a time that makes it easy to recycle your live holiday tree. The National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) urges homeowners to recycle their live Christmas trees. Just make sure that all of your ornaments and other holiday tree décor are removed first. Here are seven recycling options for your Christmas tree:

  1. Check to see if your local municipality has designated days for holiday tree pickup.
  2. Drop off your tree at a local recycling center.
  3. Use it as compost. You can chop your tree into sizeable chunks to be used in your compost container.
  4. Turn your holiday tree into mulch. Some municipalities provide mulching services. If you or your neighbor has a chipper, shred your holiday tree into mulch to spread on your landscape.
  5. Throw it in your pond for fish food. The NCTA states that your live holiday tree will feed and provide shelter for your fish.
  6. Use it as a giant birdfeeder. Add strings of popcorn and orange slices to draw birds to your holiday tree. Your Christmas tree will provide both food and shelter for your feathered friends.
  7. If you bought a ball and burlap Christmas tree, now’s the time to plant it. Make sure that you have a hole big enough for your tree’s roots to expand. And don’t forget to irrigate your tree after you plant it.

If you’re a regular Majestic Lawn Care and Landscape customer, we’ll gladly pick up your tree from your curb. We can then put it through our chipper to dispose of it. Call our office, (845) 708-2988, to schedule your holiday tree curbside pickup at NO charge!
