Your soil needs the right amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium throughout the spring, summer and fall to maintain a thick, beautiful lawn.
Both conventional and organic lawn care programs have the same goal—a thick, healthy green lawn. And yet, both types use different methods of reaching that goal.
The conventional method uses traditional weed controls to stop weeds from overtaking your yard. You also get faster results from using conventional weed control.

- Mowing: When you cut your lawn grass, your mower should have sharp blades to give it a clean cut. To avoid ruts in your yard, we encourage you to mow in different directions each time you cut your grass.
Next, set your mower height to only take the top third off each grass plant. Your lawn grass will be able to handle drought-stress better as well as grow thickly to crowd out weeds.
Finally, consider grass-cycling. Not everyone wants to leave clippings on their property and that is okay.
But if you want to save money on fertilizer, set your cutter to the mulch setting to chop up grass clippings so they can dissolve back into the soil. Grass clippings can give your soil up to a 25% nitrogen boost.
- Watering: Your lawn only needs 1”-2” of water per week. Infrequent irrigation forces the grass roots to go deeper into the soil to find moisture. Be aware, though, that not every section of your yard needs the same amount of water per week to survive.
For instance, if your lawn is under the shade for most of the day, its watering needs are going to be different from the part of your lawn that is in full sun all day long.
So adjust your property’s watering needs based on location, slope and sun exposure.
